Servals
|
Ramses is one of our resident
servals |
• The serval is a lightly built cat,
with long legs, large ears, and short tail. Its coat is light
brown with dark spots, black-tipped tail, and black ears with
distinctive white spots.
• Servals are the great jumpers,
with the ability to leap high enough to catch birds right out
of the air!
• Lives near water and in the reed
beds and marshes of Algeria and Africa south of the Sahara, where
it hunts by night, from the ground, and seeks rodents, reptiles,
birds, and small deer.
• Weigh between 17 and 40 pounds
and are 2-1/2 to 3 feet long excluding the tail.
• They live in all habitats, but
prefer moist savanna habitats, where they use their huge ears
to pinpoint the rustlings of their rodent prey.
• Their long legs give it the ability
to pounce through high grass and give its surprised prey formidable
blows with its front feet. Servals have their own predators including
leopards, lions, jackals and man.
