Lions
The
lion's size and strength have captured human imagination since
ancient times, giving these animals the nickname King of Beasts
or King of the Jungle. The icon of the lion is found on many noble
family crests, most notably Richard the Lion-Hearted and in modern
times - MGM Studios.
•
A lion's roar can be heard from a distance of 5 miles.
• Lions are poor tree-climbers, but are good jumpers
• Lions spend about 20 hours a day just lying around
• Female lions never have manes
• Lions can run as fast as 40 mph
• Lions are unique among the Big Cats because they live
in a group, called a pride, consisting of one mature male and
any number of females, cubs, and immature males. Male lions typically
feed on the kills made by the females. That's why male lions fight
viciously to retain ownership of the pride. A male lion without
a pride is faced with an uncertain future.
• Female lions typically give birth to one to four cubs
after a gestation period of about 110 days. The mother lion cares
for her cubs for up to two years. In the wild, average life span
for male lions is about 12 years, for females 16 years. In captivity,
where they receive veterinary care and plenty of food-and are
not allowed to fight-lions can live as long as 25 years.
Big
Cats of Serenity Springs has a large lion population - currently
18 lions and lionesses in residence, ranging from 2 - 25 years
of age.
