Leopards
• A large, graceful cat with a long,
lithe build - an agile climber.
• Most commonly recognized by the rosette pattern of their
coats. Though these cats are on occasion confused with the South
American Jaguar, the leopard's build is less stocky and its rosette
markings are smaller and have no internal spots.
• Completely black leopards are called Melanistic Leopards.
These are the cats mistakenly referred to as black panthers. Melanistic
cubs can be born to two spotted parents. The black leopards also
have spots, although they are difficult to see.
• Leopards hunt alone at night, stalking their prey until
it is close enough to pounce.
• They are known to hide their kill by dragging it up into
a tree to prevent it from being "stolen" by other animals
such as lions.
• The leopard is still illegally hunted (poached) for its
beautiful skin.
